You Are Enough

You Are Enough

Hi there!

So I am writing this short essay as an entry for a writing contest hosted by Positive Writer, the theme of which is “You Are Enough”. It’s meant to be inspirational and uplifting for writers, which I think is really cool. I hope you like it and feel inspired to write something awesome after reading it! Ok, here goes:

Hello fellow scribbler! I heard you might be wondering if you are enough as a writer. Ultimately you are the only one who can decide that… But maybe answering these questions will help you put things in perspective:

  • Do you enjoy writing? Does it make you happy?
  • Is there a need within you that is only satisfied by writing?
  • Does writing help you through your issues or make you feel better in times of difficulty (or even during times when things are going well)?
  • Does writing help you meet interesting people and make friends with those who share your interests?
  • Do other people (or even one person, including you) enjoy reading what you write, or feel enlightened or bettered after reading your words?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then yes! You are enough! Write to your heart’s content.

Maybe your words won’t reach beyond your circle of friends and relatives; maybe you’ll never become famous or wealthy off your writing. But you know what? Who cares? If writing makes you feel happy and fulfilled, if it gives you the feeling that your life is meaningful, then you should do it.

And you never know, there is always that chance that your work will reach the eyes of the exact person who needs to read it, who will be inspired to go out and make the world a better place because of it.

Thoreau surely hoped that someone would read “On Civil Disobedience,” and probably hoped that somebody would be spurred to action by his words, but do you think he ever in his wildest dreams thought his work would set off non-violent revolutions around the world? That he would inspire Gandhi and Dr. King strongly enough to lead crusades against injustice despite overwhelming opposition? What would this planet have been like today if Thoreau had never written?

And what will the world be like tomorrow if you don’t write? Unless you pick up your pen and get down to it, we’ll never know.

So go on, write until you run out of words, take a rest, and then write some more. You are enough, trust me.
